September 12, 2022, 7:30 p.m.  The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem (series)

Join us for the opening session of the 2022-2023 season of the Marsha Razin z”l Book and Film Club. Our first meeting of the year will be Monday, September 12 7:30-9 p.m. – on Zoom

We will discuss the series The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem, which centers around three generations of the prominent Ladino Sephardic Hermosa family living in Jerusalem. Intertwined with the family’s conflicts, alliances, and challenges, is the historical/political background of Jerusalem during the British Mandate, the establishment of the State of Israel, and the turmoil and struggles of the country through the 1970s. The show alternates between different time periods, not following chronological order, with the date noted before each episode. It explores the culture of the people and the various factions woven within the fabric of the society. Based on the book of the same name by Sarit Yishai-Levi, there are currently two seasons showing on Netflix. Several languages are spoken throughout with English subtitles provided.

Our Book and Film Club is open to all interested adults in the area.  All meetings and materials are in English.  The meetings will be held on the second Monday of each month, unless otherwise indicated.

A 10 NIS donation is requested when films are shown.
