Success Begins at Home

The library has initiated a new program called “Success Begins at Home,” together with Mercaz Rakefet Ligdol V’lifroach, which is being sponsored by the New York Federation Caring Commission. Together we have built a program for babies and toddlers (8 months to 3 years old) and their parents, whose purpose is to improve language skills through books, reading, play, and creative crafts. In the program, the parents learn to use resources that are readily available at home in order to enhance their relationship with their young children and to enrich their children’s vocabulary. The program includes story hour for the children, led by a professional storyteller, as well as lectures on speech and language development for the parents by professional therapists. There has been an enthusiastic response from parents and children who have joined the program, who attend happily. The program has already yielded positive results in terms of the children’s language development, improved communication skills for the parents and the children as well as an overall sense of achievement for everyone.

MAPAL

Mapal - Homework Help for Immigrants is but one facet of our active learning center. This after-school homework program is meant to help immigrant children to succeed in school and it is very effective. More than 110 immigrant students  come to the library on a regular basis, ie. four times a week to receive assistance with their schoolwork. Professional staff members and several high school volunteers are there to offer help. The reference area upstairs is been bubbling with students, energy and work!

Mapal has another program on Mondays which is funded by The Gimmel Foundation. The purpose of this program is to foster leadership skills amongst teenagers. The theme is teaching values through the Tanach. The teens tutor younger children so that the learning is multi-dimensional for both the teens as well as the younger students.

Literacy Encouragement Programs

These programs are to encourage children to read! Theme based programs are different each year. We have had storybook carnivals, mini sessions and other series based programs to enchant childrens' minds and entice them to read.  Watch this spot for emerging details on what's coming up in 2010-2011.

Weekly Story-hour for Parents and Tots

Each Monday at 2:15 parents and small children, age 2-4, come for a fun treat at the Library. A Bat Sherut, (national service young woman) reads an exciting story and the children enjoy an arts and crafts project related to the theme of the day. They have explored animals, foods, seasons and activities - through books!

Introducing Kindergarteners to the Library

As of Jan ’09, the BCL has established an exciting new program for Gan children in coordination with Keren Karev and the city of Beit Shemesh. The goal of the program is to give the children perhaps their first exposure to the wonder of books and libraries and to familiarize the children with the library so that they feel at home here.

The program includes talking to the children about the way a library develops and how growth necessitates order. They discover ways to sort the books so that they can be easily found. The children sort a pile of books themselves deciding where to put each book depending on colors, page size, number of words and pictures per page etc. They discover the color coded labeling system for books and take a tour of the library to find where each of the categories they defined are actually found in the library. Once at a shelf, they learn about alphabetizing books by author name. Ultimately, the children get to sit down with some delicious books and READ! The program continues after a reading break with a creative activity by Keren Karev. We believe the children should experience all kinds of development within the walls of the library and are therefore very pleased to be cooperating with Keren Karev for this enriching program.

Elementary Watson, Elementary

All children should have an intimate knowledge of their neighborhood library. To this end, we will bring classes of elementary school children to the library to get acquainted with all that our library has to offer. The program will include a tour and a treasure hunt to enable the children to discover the hidden treasures of the library first hand.
